P90X Back and Biceps Review

This workout is all about the glamor muscles!! I completed this workout last night, and I’m excited to say that this is the type of workout that will leave you with BULGING biceps after you complete it (oh, and of course a beautiful back :-)).

This workout is awesome, especially if you’re like me and always wanted those glamor muscles to pop (Biceps, Triceps, and Shoulders). No sooner are you doing pull ups focused on using your biceps (like Corn Cobs & Chin-Ups), you’re right back to pumping out reps on Open Arm Curls, or Concentration Curls!

I’ve grown since my first round, when I was barely sticking with 8-15 pound weights, to this round where I’m using 25 pounds for just about every exercise (including Static Arm Curls, which was a great improvement). I can definitely say that if you stick with the program, push play everyday, you’ll see results. I’ve tried everything under the sun when it comes to getting fit and losing weight, and I finally found some great products that work (Thank you Beachbody!).

For women or men who aren’t looking to beef up that bicep muscle, just use a lighter weight with more reps. My wife does this workout and uses 5 pound weights for just about every exercise. The point is, if you are still working the muscle in an effort to get lean arms, you’ll fire up your metabolism with regular weight workouts which pay off in the long-run. So YES, this workout is for everyone, just define your goal of what Tony describes as 8-10 for size, 12-16 for lean.

As for the pull-ups, a lot of people talk with me about how horrible they are at pull-ups (see P90X Pull Ups for some tips). Don’t worry about it! I still use support for my pull-ups and I have no shame in saying that, its all about getting better, and keep pushing play and trying, and you’ll get to where you want to be! If you use the bands, back up or use a stronger band once you’re ready to up the ante.

P90X Back and Biceps Review on some of the Killer Workout Moves

Ok, here are my thoughts on some of the exercises included in this powerhouse workout:

Lawnmowers/Elbows-Out Lawnmowers: If you’ve done Chest & Back before, you’ll remember lawnmowers (literally starting the engine!). This workout routine adds elbows-out to provide an extra something. On both lawnmowers and elbows-out lawnmowers I feel it most in my back, shoulder, and biceps since its more of a synergistic move.

One-Arm Cross-Body Curls: I like these because they really work your bicep in a good way. You take the weight from the bottom and literally (as the name implies) go across your body until you form the top of the curl. I always get a great pump of the bicep after this exercise.

Twenty-Ones: This one is crazy, and for only being the 3rd exercise in this particular workout, it puts your biceps into high-gear really quickly. I use 25 pounds on this one and you start with doing 7 from loose arms to half-way up, then you do 7 from mid-way to all the way up, and last 7 are full curls (BRING IT!).

Hammer Curls: A nice compliment to your biceps are the fore-arms, which are given their adequate attention near the end of the workout with the “hammer series”. These are a little easier (and can generally become easier to workout over time). Keep up on the hammers and you’ll see a nice forearm appear that supports your glamoring arm and bicep!

Corn-Cob Pull-Ups: Just try on these, that’s the best advice. These aren’t easy, and even Bobby makes the mention of “I hate these” and plays on a funny little back and forth between him and Tony..But he makes a good point, these aren’t easy! I use support on these and do my best. In time you’ll see improvement, but don’t get frustrated just because of this one! Do your best, and forget the rest!

Superman: Superman! Banana! Oh wait, not for this one!! These are just Supermans, and really work your mid and lower back beautifully! Stick with it as best as you can, even if you can’t go as high up as the kids on the workout. I started as best as I could and now in round 3 I can fully fly in the air thanks to pressing play everyday! I usually close my eyes and pretend that I’m flying thousands of feet above the buildings throughout the city skyline (come one, we all have to make fitness fun somehow, right?).
